bohemian neutrals. / sfgirlbybay

ever since my trip to tulum, mexico and especially my visit to the (currently closed) boutique hotel coqui coqui i’ve really been inspired by this kind of neutral bohemian vibe. it’s a unique pairing of natural elements, ornate accessories, with a little bit of ‘beachy’ thrown in for that funky, unexpected twist. hard to picture, right? and almost harder to explain, but i think these visuals will help guide you there. it’s a look i’ve strived for in my own home, and find really relaxing and welcoming. it’s a mix of slouchy sofas, vintage flea market finds, rattan, ceramics, even some gold gilded pieces in there, too as you can see in my instagram photo just below. add some great tiled floors, or natural woven rugs, warm textiles and some interesting artwork and you’ve got bohemian neutrals.

green wall paint via architectural digest espana. / sfgirlbybay

this beautiful home has gone green, but not the way you may be thinking. featured in architectural digest espana, the architectural firm ábaton renovated and rescued the original 1920’s shade of green of the living room wall and kept the original moldings of the ceiling for one very stunning focal point. who needs artwork when you’ve got such an interesting patina? located in central madrid, i love the modern mix of old and new while preserving the beauty of the past. for the full home tour, visit architectural digest espana, which has long been one of my favorite decor magazines.

velvet is such a deliciously luxurious fabric, usually rich in jewel tones and lovely to the touch. it’s the perfect transitional textile into fall, too. add a few velvety throw pillows to your sofa and you’re well on your way to warming up your decor for the change of seasons. i’m seeing a lot of velvet furniture options out there, too — from fancy tufted settees to sexy swivel chairs and modern chrome dining chairs upholstered in pastels, velvets really up your elegance factor. i rounded up some inspiration for you should you like to delve into some buttery, yummy velvet this season.

inspiring interior via rue magazine. / sfgirlbybay

the latest issue (no. 47!) of rue magazine is lovely, and one of my favorite features is this apartment in oslo. it’s no wonder it’s so great — the home owner is interior stylist and designer rikki bye-andersen, so she’s got the skillset to pull off this very polished, but charming pastel-lovers’ dream pad. not only is the color palette easy on the eyes, the lighting fixtures are pretty fabulous, too — all the better to see you with, my dear! this issue of rue also features a great story on san francisco-based knot artist windy chin; a beautiful new york dinner party thrown by erin of apartment34 and a visit with holly of decor8. for the full home tour, and more, visit rue magazine.

oh that milk magazine — it never fails to disappoint. i regularly peruse milk for their inspiring children’s fashion shoots (always so clever even if they are written in french, which i can’t read a word of!) but it’s when they’ve included a home tour feature in the magazine that i get overly excited. this apartment is no different — in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, a stone’s throw from the Rue du Bac, this is the lovely home of Morgane Sézalory, Sézane fashion boutique founder. just in time for NYFW Sézane has just opened in new york so what better time to catch a glimpse of how she lives? which is apparently surrounded by utter charm — i mean just look at this place. that pale pink & green velvety color palette and those crazy good light fixtures — oh la la! to see the full sneak peek into this french stunner, visit milk magazine.

blue walls and pink bedding. / sfgirlbybay

beds are so important — and bedrooms are to be equally considered. i have been a bit of an insomniac lately and it’s really making me reconsider my bedroom decor. i have that very large batgirl bed as i like to call it, and then a vintage black armoire (which used to be white and may need to return to its former glory), and a large black dresser. it’s weighing me down a bit to tell you the truth, so i’ll keep you posted on how i change it up. and i’m also considering some new artwork as well, which naturally had me perusing pinterest for ideas. i keep a bedroom pinboard, as well as a gallery pinboard so i checked those for inspiration. i love so many of the bedroom art depicted here — some are a bold statement like a large format photograph (selfie, anyone?) or the vintage portrait paintings (you know how i love those), or a tiny gallery of mementos and prints that really mean something special. what do you prefer?

beach house in biarritz / sfgirlbybay

recently featured in vtwonen this is the Biarritz beach house brought back to life by Constance Dorian, who found it in ruin and disrepair. she completely renovated the 1940’s beach bungalow, adding loads of fresh white paint — to floors and ceilings. what she’s achieved is a relaxing pastel playhouse by the shore with cozy rugs, sheepskins, and rich fabrics like faded old linens and vintage lace but with a great modern twist. the kitchen is crazy good eclectic — the sort of spot you’d love to linger with a cup of tea and some sort of scone-making to do. for the full fun home tour, visit vtwonen — it’s lovely.

vintage decor inside tigerlily perfumery / sfgirlbybay

I’m delighted to introduce our next guest and she is Antonia Kohl, the lovely proprietress of Tigerlily Perfumery here in San Francisco. Located along Valencia Street in the city’s Mission neighborhood, this gem is the city’s only boutique dedicated entirely to artisan and niche perfumes, including a deep collection of U.S. indie fragrances and hard-to-find cult favorites from around the world. If you’re looking for a truly unique and signature scent for yourself, a special someone or want to get a better understanding of perfumes, this is the place to visit. Antonia has expertly guided many to discover unique fragrances they wouldn’t have otherwise. I learned so much from her, even participating in a workshop to craft my own personal fragrance. And it’s a fun, casual space to explore and play with so many varieties. It’s amazing how a little spritz or dab of something can bring so much beauty and joy into people’s lives. Before opening Tigerlily, Antonia enjoyed an exciting 20-year career in interactive design and production before launching her new business. This holiday season her shop will celebrate its two-year anniversary. Be sure to pop into Tigerlily next time you’re in SF and in the neighborhood.

So why perfume?
I’ve always loved perfume! Like most people, smell triggers so many of my memories and influences my moods. Smell can be an underrated sense but it is deeply impactful on both an emotional and physiological level.

vintage perfume bottles / sfgirlbybay

What’s your first memory of perfume?
My first memory of perfume is from early elementary school when a classmate presented me with a pretty porcelain bottle of Tea Rose eau de toilette that he’d stolen from his mother. Although my mom made sure the bottle was dutifully returned, the idea of perfume stuck with me as a treasure and romantic symbol.

What inspired you to launch your business?
For several years, my husband and I would check out boutique perfume shops when visiting other cities but hadn’t found one just right for us at home. I left the digital world hoping to work on a smaller scale, doing something I love and with the public – perfume was a healthier choice than opening a pub!

vintage mirrored tray with perfume bottles / sfgirlbybay

How should one really go about selecting a perfume?
Explore, sniff and try it on! We really encourage our customers to take the time to smell broadly in order to hone in on what they love and to try on multiple scents to see what works with their skin chemistry. While some people are looking for a signature scent, most are interested in having a variety of fragrances to wear so can also consider mood, season, occasion and self-expression.

We truly believe that the process of selecting a perfume should be fun! At the shop, our customers love to hear about the people, ideas and stories behind each scent. And they definitely enjoy taking home samples to try out!

You always hear about “notes” in perfume. Can you tell us more about them?
Like notes in music, notes are scent components that make up the composition of a perfume. Notes are individual smells, like sandalwood or bergamot, which are combined in layers to create the overall experience of a perfume. Structurally, most perfumes are designed with Top Notes, Heart Notes and Base Notes. The top notes are the first notes you smell after applying a perfume. They are tiny molecules and dissipate quickly. Heart Notes are next and last longer, bridging to the Base Notes, which stick around the longest. Citruses are typical top notes, florals are often found in the heart and base notes tend to be “darker” notes such as amber, sandalwood and vanilla.

Common mistakes people make in buying perfume?
Buying perfume based on a brand name, a review or what it smells like on a test strip are the biggest mistakes people make. Your skin chemistry is the final ingredient in every perfume you wear, so try before you buy! This isn’t a mistake, but I encourage people not to pigeonhole themselves into too narrow of a scent profile, e.g. “I only like woods” or “I hate florals”. Over time and with natural changes in our lives, our tastes and skin chemistry can change. With so many scents and so little time – why not keep exploring?

You carry artisan and niche perfumes. What is artisan and what is niche?
Good question! To me, niche initially meant scents made by smaller perfume houses and individual perfumers who were able to maintain a high level of quality and creativity because they weren’t beholden to the “bottom-line” demands of the mass market. These days, the term “niche” has become a bit dilute as big brands buy up popular small houses and launch shadow brands to fit into this category, which has risen notably in popularity and has a large international fan base. When I use the term “artisan perfume”, I’m referring to a scent that is handcrafted by an individual perfumer who is not associated with a large brand. Generally this also implies a high-quality product that is made in smaller volume.

What are some of these hard-to-find cult favorite perfumes you carry?
We carry many wonderful lines from the United States, including what we believe to be the largest brick-and-mortar collection of West Coast fragrances. In terms of international cult perfumes that are hard to find at retail, here are a few beauties:

Tauer Perfumes: we carry an enticing selection of fragrances by the massively beloved Swiss perfumer, Andy Tauer, including L’Air Du Desert Marocain and Lonestar Memories. Perfumistas also love his new Tauerville line!

Neela Vermeire: a sublime collection from Paris with roots in French perfumery and rare ingredients from India. Neela Vermeire collaborated with famed perfumer, Bertrand Duchaufour, to create these highly coveted perfumes, including Ashoka and Mohur, which are tributes to Indian history and culture.

Papillon Perfumery: a new line out of London that exploded onto the perfume scene last year with the niche hits, Anubis, Tobacco Rose and Angelique. This year the perfumer, Liz Moores, added a dirty, vintage-style bombshell, Salome,

What perfume are you currently wearing now?
It’s finally starting to feel like winter so today I’m wearing one of my favorite warm gourmands, Captured in Amber, from En Voyage by Shelley Waddington. It’s chocolate amber with a hint of spice, created here in the Bay Area. This week I’ve also worn the smoky Broken Theories by Kerosene and vintage-y This Grand Affair by Blocki Perfumes.

Any strange fragrance requests from clients?
This may not surprise the serious perfume-heads in the room, but I have been asked for perfumes that smell like “wet dog”, “skunk” and “sweaty s*x”.

What type of events and workshops do you host?
We love events at Tigerlily! We host trunk shows, fragrance launches and perfume presentations as well as perfumery workshops and classes, including custom blending workshops with well-known San Francisco perfumer, Yosh Han.

So what’s next for Tigerlily?
Lots of changes coming! We’re expanding to take over more of the space at 973 Valencia in January, which will allow us to bring in additional lines as well as to build space to accommodate a packed calendar of events and workshops. We’ll also be working on our ecommerce site, which launched on a small scale and needs tweaking! On the horizon are a unique online sample program, sales and promotions.

vintage perfume bottles, tray and figurines / sfgirlbybay

Other top spots in the Mission one should visit around Tigerlily?
Love & Luxe is not to be missed! Betsy Barron presents her own line alongside a beautiful selection of artisan jewelry lines from around the world, many of which are local, all using precious materials in refined and creative ways.

Lolo is one of our favorite spots to take visiting perfumers to lunch before events. We’re in love with the avocado tacos and mescal margaritas. The atmosphere is kitschy and colorful and the “Jaliscan-Californian” food is seriously fresh, yummy and unpretentious.

Luna Reinne Gallery passionately promotes new and up-and-coming artists from the Bay Area, including three of my favorites, Reuben Rude, Bill Zindel and Jose Arenas. Fun openings!

Paxton Gate doesn’t need the promotion but they are still one of my favorite spots to send out-of-town friends and customers on a Valencia stroll. In addition to their curated collection of curiosities, they host great pop-ups like the Spark Ceramics planter-making workshop (they do beer stein classes too!).

Nooworks makes dresses that are the definition of fun! Owner Jennifer D’Angelo has been a longtime fixture in the Mission District and it’s been inspiring to see how her line has grown and flourished. Not to mention the sales parties with bands and libations.

boo! are you afraid of arms that sneak out from seemingly nowhere and grab you from behind? well, never fear — these cool spider-inspired lighting fixtures will do no such thing. they may look like stealthy spidey arms, but you’ve nothing to worry about — instead, these lovely long-reaching arms will just cast a better light on any spooky space you may encounter. personally, i’ve been trying to figure out if i can incorporate one of these serge mouille-inspired specials in my kitchen, however, their arms are indeed soooo long and lanky i’m not sure i can make it work. but i haven’t given up hope yet.

okay, it’s finally time to start sharing the highlights of my visit to copenhagen. i was invited by visit copenhagen to come see the city myself and high on my list (okay, more like the tippy top of my must-sees) was The Apartment. Located on the second floor of a beautifully restored 18th century apartment along a canal in Christianshavn, a charming district of the old Copenhagen, the apartment is a little tricky to locate — so look for the yellow building with the big green doors. founder Tina Seidenfaden Busck has designed the space just like a real home — except you can actually shop here — think one of a kind shoppable decor installations. It’s an eclectic mix of vintage and rare European furniture updated and re-upholstered in gorgeous fabrics, and accented with beautiful textiles, rugs, amazing lighting fixtures, and contemporary art. Stunning and ingenious.

home decor inspiration via the apartment dk. / sfgirlbybaydecor installation at the apartment dk. / sfgirlbybay

we got a firsthand look at the apartment’s recent installation which runs through November 11th: Mingei at The Apartment — a unique Japanese collection curated by Terry Ellis who began collecting in the 1990’s. Mingei was a celebration of everyday objects made by unknown craftspeople, which emerged in the 1920’s partly in response to the industrialization of Japan. In recent years, Terry Ellis has spearheaded a craft renaissance in Japan, popularising Mingei, where his signature is mixing mid-century modern furniture and Mingei craft. and the beauty of all this? it’s not only stunning and inspiring — it’s shoppable. simply call the apartment or send an email — they ship worldwide. The Apartment is also available for private consultation on interiors and art, and founder Tina Seidenfaden Busck is a revered resource for her profound knowledge of contemporary art and design. The Apartment strives to be a place not only for purchasing beautiful items but also as a sphere for an ongoing dialogue about art and design. i feel so fortunate to have been able to see it with my own very envious eyes.

let’s bring a little bohemian into the boudoir, shall we? this happens to be my personal favorite look — a little funky, a bit romantic and very vintage-inspired. i aim for this vibe in my own bedroom and get the look with unique lighting, like my hanging pendant lamps, a Fringe Throw Blanket, crochet trimmed sheets, and fluffy and velvet throw pillows. think unexpected and mixed but definitely not matched. a statement-making headboard helps, as well as a great duvet cover — on top of my own pale gray duvet i add a vintage white crochet lace bedspread — it makes for a really comfy layered look, and i love the contrast of the gray peeking through the white crochet. my advice is to just have fun and play with it — but that’s always my theory about design — use what you love, try it out and if it turns out you hate it, change it up again! when you use vintage pieces they’re usually affordable, and the resale opportunities are endless. if i don’t like it — onto craigslist, chairish or ebay it goes, or i sell it at the next yard sale. viva la vintage!

growing up in suburban los angeles mid-century modern house, i always dreamed of a two-story house. not so much for the second level, per se, but for the staircase itself. there’s something so romantic about a staircase, yes? how many movies have depicted a love scene location? plenty, i reckon. i have an outside staircase to my home, but it’s rustic wood and shouldn’t be painted. so i’ll just have to fantasize about these pretty steps. i’ve noticed a trend stepping it up a bit — jet black staircases, making them even a bit more dramatic. swoon-worthy and scene-stealing for certain.

there’s not much that doesn’t inspire me about this beautiful barcelona home featured recently in architectural digest españa, one of my favorite decor magazines. if you’ve never taken a look at AD españa, i highly recommend subscribing to their newsletter, or the magazine so you can peek inside homes as inspirational as this one on a regular basis. this is a very cinematic home, not surprisingly perhaps because it’s the renovated flat of an architect, Sabine Wlokas and his partner Francisco Javier Gómez Pinteño, a director and screenwriter. their flair for the dramatic and fearless pairing of vintage found furnishings from just about every era had me rethinking my entire space. i both love, and hate when that happens! their dogma is my dogma: celebratory decay. “I find the most original old, much more interesting. Everything we have has sentimental value. There are things that we find, and others that find us,” says Sabine. I just love that kind of heartfelt philosophy of design. for the full tour, visit architectural digest españa.

the allis in chicago. / sfgirlbybay

while we’re over here in L.A. sipping on ice coffees in january, the city of chicago is seeking somewhere to ride out the winter. whether you’re a chi-town native, or just going for the really really good food scene the allis needs to be on your list. a cozy, comfortable, and curated locale it’s the perfect place to order up a round of hot toddy’s and the chef’s special. classic midwest charm seems to be everywhere you turn in the allis, from exposed brick walls to tufted seating — see for yourself. we have to say, we’re a little jealous of those who get to wear layers, so this wear this there is all about those coddling wool coats, and classic loafers. if you’re needing something new to listen to (and to motivate you into the new year) try the podcast sessions by matte black — a great resource for creatives looking to stimulate those hibernating holiday brains.

this week’s instagram worthy feed to follow is @_designtales_. meet Laura Muthesius & Nora Eisermann — a lifestyle & food Photography and Styling team born and based in Berlin, germany. their beautifully moody instagrams share a peek inside their homes, their studio spaces and the inspiring shoots they produce, often in collaboration with some other very talented friends. i always love a look into creative studio spaces and @_designtales_ does just that. plus there’s all that lovely natural lighting they seem to effortlessly capture. i like an instagram feed that makes you want to make better pictures, offering up eye candy and education — a perfect place to spend some time looking around. and check out their beautiful blog and food stories, too. you might even find a great new recipe while you’re there, too.

chandelier in modern living room. / sfgirlbybay

there are days when the mind wanders and we dream of living elsewhere, right? i mean, as much as we love our own homes, we can occasionally get that feeling that ‘the grass is always greener’ somewhere else. for me it can be the dream of living in a place with uber tall and very ornate ceilings — someplace like antwerp, or paris, london, or even brooklyn where their brownstones have enviable architectural details such as these. here in southern california we aren’t as apt to have these skyscraper tall ceilings and beautiful crown moldings, except for in the odd victorian still left standing in certain neighborhoods like angelino heights or hancock park, and of course mansions in beverly hills. but the average homes here in L.A. aren’t like these fancy spaces, so today i’m dreaming about being able to decorate a space like one of these — especially if that means contrasting all the ornate with a modern edge. — come along with me, won’t you?

sometimes i just space and forget how a plethora of wonderful handmade items can be found right at our fingertips — quite literally. etsy is just a click away from some of the loveliest online resources for handcrafted goods of all kinds — from stationery, ceramics and art prints like lucy augé’s Pink Hydrangea Exhibition Poster (above), to handmade lampshades. i went and checked out some of my favorite shops and then scoured Etsy for some new ones and found a dozen favorite shops among them. enjoy, and perhaps go on an Etsy hunt of your own!

fanaberia is the newest breakfast spot in this seaside destination of sopot, poland. it promises enjoyment of good design inspo, delicious crepes, and shelter from the salty sea air. with a fresh palette of nautical blues, rosy pinks, and sleek neutrals you’ll want to steal this easy-going look for your very own kitchen. if we could apply the concept of hygge (the danish concept of comfort as a wellness method) to our wardrobes, this outfit would be it — complete with Malin+Goetz Replenishing Face Serum. in that same thought, our read this there is slow beauty: a beautiful book dedicated to the rituals of living a dull, purposeful life. it’s a great read while you chow down on some chocolate drizzled crepes and lattes.

my kitchen makeover reveal.

sfgirlbybay kitchen makeover. / sfgirlbybay

ah, at long last, my kitchen makeover is about 88% complete! it’s taken some time, but we have new paint, lighting, flooring, kitchen countertops, fridge and appliances, and new hardware! voilà! i’m not sure if you ever saw the ‘before’ but we’ve lightened up the mood in here considerably. i liked the dark gray walls and subway tile with dark grout, but after i added the pergola outside, the room got a little less bright, so a lot of white was needed! i’ve partnered with some of my favorite go-to brands to complete the look: armstrong flooring, Caesarstone countertops, benjamin moore paint, schoolhouse electric for lighting fixtures and all modern for some dreamy smeg kitchen appliances and furnishings. check out all the details and resources just below!

my ultimate goal is to have french doors installed to exit to the outdoor dining space, and i’m still trying to figure out whether i paint the door frame white, or do i paint the window frame black? or simply wait for french doors and decide then — so many decisions! i’d also like to add one more dramatic lighting fixture in the center of the kitchen, so i’m still hunting for something great. but as i’ve posted before — what i’d really like to do is rip out this soffit ceiling and expose the wood beams like you see in the dining area. but on to what we’ve changed up thus far! partnering with armstrong, we ripped up the hideous beige tile floor and put in their Hickory Point Traditional Luxury Flooring in Copper Penny. it matches the hardwoods in my dining area to perfection and is so easy to clean and maintain. we stained the threshold to match, and it looks really seamless! the armstrong team was a dream to work with — from samples to ordering, and finally, their installation team was so professional and such nice guys.

next up, we removed the gray speckled granite and lightened up the whole feel of the kitchen with Caesarstone’s beautiful Frosty Carrina quartz countertops and backsplash. i love, love, love them! they don’t stain and are super easy to clean. and the look is exactly what i’d hoped for — much brighter and lighter feeling in here. and one very cool thing we did was create a Caesarstone countertop for my vintage farm table so now it’s like a large kitchen island and a huge new prep and cooking space. i’m so happy with how it turned out. we added a few of all modern‘s black delavan barstools so friends can have a comfy chat with me while i’m cooking.

we also lightened up the walls with benjamin moore’s Aura paint in oxford white (my go-to white color) and it’s so much fresher looking than the gray. it looks like an entirely different kitchen, and i love it. to the existing ikea cabinets i added new brass hardware i found on amazon — kohler’s Purist 3-Inch Drawer Pulls and Purist/Stillness Cabinet Knobs in Vibrant Moderne Brushed Gold. I also changed out my old faucet for Delta’s Trinsic Kitchen faucet in Brilliance Champagne Bronze. and lastly, for a bit of contrast, i partnered with all modern and added their amazing black smeg refrigerator, and smeg appliances — their blender, toaster and tea kettle — all in black which look smashing against the white countertops. i also added schoolhouse electric’s alabax surface mounted fixtures to the ceiling and their isaac sconce above the sink. and as i mentioned i may add a center fixture, as well.

another addition is my Castagnier 9 Drawer Dresser — which i originally had in my bedroom, but when i lightened things up in there, too i thought it might just fit perfectly as a buffet in the kitchen, and an excellent piece to store all kinds of serving pieces and cookware. eventually i think I’d like to add some open shelving above it, but for now, Rico Suave and Emma Lou are still keeping me company above the buffet. You might also wonder about the rather unusual placement of the quirky vintage portraits near the fridge — that’s where a hideous electrical panel is, which i need to move but to do so is quite a big job, so i’ve added that to my to-do list. but, we’re getting there!
