Topanga canyon home of designer mason st. peter. / sfgirlbybay

We’ve waxed poetic of our love for Mason St. Peter and his wife Serena Mitnik-Miller before (here, here, and here) but lately I’ve been finding myself completely gushing over his interior architecture projects and bookmaking things for my dream home. With an obvious love for lumber in its natural form, lots of cascading sunlight, and a modern twist on minimal design, Mason’s spaces are some of my favorite to spend time scrolling through.

I originally stumbled upon his work while obsessing over San Francisco and Los Angeles’ General Store (which Serena and Mason founded together) but have since fallen head-over-heels for their home in Topanga Canyon and basically every new project that crops up on Instagram. Searching for pared-down spaces to inspire a little refresh? Look no further.

berlin home of instagrammer @lieblingsblicke via my scandinavian home. / sfgirlbybay

i discovered this instagram worthy feed when my scandinavian home featured @lieblingsblicke’s beautiful berlin home earlier this year. her home is warm, colorful and full of character — there’s loads of fun collectibles and she doesn’t shy away from a bold accent wall. and that kitchen — it just screams charming with those checkerboard floors and deep green tiled backsplash. for more interior inspiration, follow @lieblingsblicke.

rust orange velvet chairs in SWOON design studio. / sfgirlbybay

long gone are the days of sterile office spaces and boring design studios — enter: SWOON, the Studio, a dallas creative agency with one heck of a home base. founded by Samantha Reitmayer Sano, swoon is a holistic creative firm with projects spanning interior design (i mean, duh!) to branding. when i first stumbled upon an image from the space on pinterest, i just knew i had to follow down the rabbit hole to the studio in its entirety. rue mag to the rescue! from those lush looking velvet chairs to the calming take on mid-century decor (did you see the giant ceramic chain by MQuan?!), this is one office i wouldn’t mind clocking into.

Amanda Dawbarn's modern home. / sfgirlbybay

As someone who is both a little obsessed with weddings and constantly finding myself pinning sweet little nurseries, I’m very familiar with the world of 100 Layer Cake / Cakelet’s founder Amanda Dawbarn. When her home began cropping up everywhere over the last couple of weeks, I KNEW it was a tour I needed to share.

The oasis in Playa Del Rey is a wonderful mix of Mediterranean inspired stillness and classic California modernity.  In a recent feature, Amanda told Domino of her love for all things Mediterranean, “We were so inspired by the aesthetics there. The stucco they use in Puglia; in Rome, how every hotel has the coolest tile you’ve ever seen. Travel was definitely the impetus.” Coupled with the mainstays of my favorite spaces (graphic yet minimal art, mid-century leanings, and a controlled, peaceful color palette), the coastal-inspired space is filled with endless inspiration. Happy pinning!

As is always the case, lately I’ve found myself hankering to get away somewhere exotic. With no specific locale in mind and no plans to whisk myself away any time soon, a little global interior inspiration will have to tide me over for the time being. Enter: all of the Moroccan textiles, South American woven fixtures, and African mud-cloth my heart can handle. Since eclectic styling is making a comeback, it’s no wonder that well-traveled, internationally curated rooms would top my list of drool-worthy spaces.

Do you have a favorite modern global look?

sunlight interior of Casa Luis Barragán. / sfgirlbybay

weekend greetings! are you ready for the holidays? i’ve not done much in the way of decorating with the exception of hanging a wreath. i suppose i’d better get on it, but honestly, december arrived so quickly i’ve just felt off my holiday decorating game! this week’s friday finds are simply random beauties i’ve found around the internet — they too are not very holiday-inspired, forgive me! and maybe i’ll get to feeling festive this weekend! cheers!

xo, victoria

  1. the light in this beautiful image of Casa Luis Barragán just drew me in. and i’ve always wanted to visit señor Barragán’s mexico city home, so let this serve as a reminder to check that off my must-visit list.
  2. the design files always features the best home tours, and this one of mary featherstons ‘granny flat’ update is a stunner! plus — thonet chairs, my very favorite.
  3. this image is aptly captioned afternoon light is australian photographer jessica tremp’s lovely home. her entire instagram feed is a must-follow for constant inspiration.
  4. i really love this clever tufted fabric headboard idea featured on rue — it’s brittany shields’ quaint 1930’s duplex in atlanta, georgia and her entire home is beautiful.
  5. vintage daybeds are my jam, and this is a lovely one featured on milk decoration. this is chez Jean-Christophe Aumas and his entire flat is pretty spectacular, so i’d recommend having a look.
  6. another perfect daybed situation — this time featured on design*sponge. it’s the williamsburg, brooklyn flat of stylist Rebecca Bartoshesky and as you might imagine, a stylist’s flat is always one you should take a peek at. the entire tiny space is most inspiring.
  7. i love a fantastic oversized lighting fixture and this one surpasses my expectations. not surprising considering it’s the home of photographer anna malin, who is über talented.
  8. an umbrella as light fixture? i’m in! this entire dining room is just lovely but that umbrella really just adds so much dramatic flair, and i’ll bet it’s just smashing when lit.

What makes the perfect space? I’m pretty sure it’s a perfectly executed mixture of abounding natural light, the blank canvas of white walls, and expertly scaled-back decor. Thankfully, space exploration ticks all those boxes and then some with their schoolhouse loft project. With a calming mix of intentional tchotchkes (is that a thing? I’m making it a thing), archways bursting with character, and a kitchen I’m pretty much dying to cook in, this space is one I’d happily flock to any day.

Keep scrolling for a bit of interior daydreaming.

inspiring interior via @TRNKNYC on instagram. / sfgirlbybay

i found myself down this particular rabbit hole after seeing that fabulous painting (just below) on instagram and from there i was lead to TRNK-NYC. i’ve long admired TRNK and their philosophy about design is right in line with mine: “Our ideal home is considered, yet approachable. It feels collected, not decorated. We’ve hand-picked a unique assortment that together strike this rare balance — a contemporary home, rich with contrast and character.” TRNK’s collections are all about creating personal spaces that speak to who we are, and how we think about ourselves and how we live. what i like about their eclectic homewares and furniture is that blend so seemlessly with vintage pieces and they never look cookie-cutter. their styling is impeccable and very liveable. we’ve featured them on instagram worthy, so be sure and check that out, and follow @TRNKNYC for more.

have you had fantasies now and then about hopping in an airstream and hitting the open road? yes? me too! i’ve always wanted to cross the country in a vw van, caravan or airstream of some kind — or travel throughout california’s small coastal towns from here down to san diego, baja and then back all the way up to eureka — seeing all that you miss when flying over and just slowly take it all in. but these airstreams — well they’ve taken them to the next level! from pretty posh (see velvet and lucite above) to rustic modern, these are giving me major wanderlust, or at the very least, airstream-envy. they’ve moved beyond what was once just for road trips and made these airstreams very liveable. with the popularity of tiny houses and prefabs, i think this is just another dimension to scaling back and living small — but most certainly in style. i think you’ll be inspired by their small space ingenuity and design sensibility. happy trails!

ornate moldings in paris apartment via vogue. / sfgirlbybay

minimalist, but absolutely breathtaking, that’s what this paris apartment in le Marais, my favorite neighborhood, featured in vogue has got going on. i mean, who needs a lot of excess when you’ve got these gorgeous parquet floors, epic empire-high ceilings, and enviable crown moldings? with all that going for you, you’d really just like the space to speak for itself, and that’s exactly how this creative parisian couple has carefully, but casually curated their 19th-century apartment. owners and interior designers Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of festen architecture have created a space i would definitely like to be invited to — just to hang out on those stacked vintage leather gym mats they discovered from an old school (another, they brilliantly repurposed into that smashing headboard!). their lighting and vintage classic seating choices are pretty amazing, too. for more inspiration visit their website, and for the full home tour, visit vogue.

we see a lot of white and bright kitchens out there, like yesterday’s beautiful kitchen from our food stories. but what about the dark side? i love a dark and dramatic kitchen. i’ve only gone partway there, with my black smeg fridge and appliances, but i’ve yet to pull the trigger on a totally black space. but look how sophisticated these kitchens look? all could take is a can of paint (my go-to black paint is benjamin moore’s onyx black) or perhaps you just tile your backsplash with some very black beauties like these from clé tiles. or, you can just chicken out and find yourself some black crockery, kitchen counter appliances, or the ultimate black smeg!

colorful glass hanging lantern lights. / sfgirlbybay

i have a lot of decor addictions — chairs, vintage art and lighting. lighting can be so sculptural and beautiful and really make a huge impact on a room. i’ve been seeing a lot of these dome-like, bulbous, glowing fixtures around lately, and they just make me so happy. they’re colorful, but in a subtle and very well-designed way and very statement-making. i’m always on the hunt in france for great vintage lighting fixtures for super marché, so i’ve been saving a lot of these images on my bright lights pinboard for inspiration, and thought i’d share a few of my favorite beauties with you.

leave it to the socialite family to find all the très chic parisan apartments! like this one in the paris neighborhood of Gare de l’Est where a young couple and their son have created a uniquely beautiful blended space, combining his family heirlooms and her knack for scoring classic vintage treasures, and all those fabulous lighting fixtures. i’m headed back to france in a few weeks to shop for super marché at the french flea markets (after my trip to italy next week!) so seeing places like this beautiful home filled with pretty vintage things always gets me excited for the hunt. for the full tour and more about resources, visit the socialite family.

milk decoration recently featured the french countryside home workshop of designer Mylène Scotto, also the Founder of Georges a beautiful shop full of decorative objects made by Mylène. her home in a small town in southwest france is rustic, but chic and features much of her really creative lighting fixtures — which are almost like imperfect gauze butterfly wings or flower petals. i went down a little rabbit hole after more inspiration from Mylène and discovered her instagram where she shares her latest creations, and her shop, where she features her creations beautifully displayed in the homes of customers who have purchased them. have a look, and for the full interview, visit milk decoration.

there’s nothing much basic about this mountain cottage designed by kate and ben towill of basic projects. tucked away up in cashiers, north Carolina, on a high plateau in The Heart Of The Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s the ultimate cozy ‘getaway from it all’ kind of place. they’ve designed it with an english cottage vibe in mind with loads of vintage artwork and home furnishings, but i love the unique, modern touches, too — like those Marcel Breuer Mid-Century Modern steel dining chairs upholstered in mustard yellow and that beautiful plush velvet sofa — it’s always so much more fun to pair unexpected pieces together. for the full tour, visit basic projects and visit their ‘behind the scenes’ photo journal as well!

sophisticated bed suites at hotel panache. / sfgirlbybay

i’ve been seeing this trend gaining traction for some time now and i’m not at all unhappy about it. meet the art deco bed — with its feminine curves and refined vintage vibe. i’m not sure if it started with the beautiful and sophisticated bed suites at hotel panache, or somewhere else, but the bed below certainly was shared around instagram and pinterest with gusto. you can resource the look online from upholstered headboards like anthropologie’s Feather Collection Bed, urban outfitters’s Marcella Velvet Bed, west elm’s Lana Upholstered Bed and the Demilune Bed, (of which i co-designed the fabric) from the inside. and if you like the cane headboards try industry west’s version or this pretty bamboo version from kouboo when it comes to color palette, think pale pinks, soft greens and blues, and perhaps some black accents and a killer light fixture for a perfect ‘steal this look’.

we’re heading somewhere beautiful just in time for those last lingering days of summer. welcome to the natural beauty and calm of the Balearic island of Menorca, spain and specifically to menorca experimental, a brand new, stunning ‘agrotourismo’ or farm stay resort surrounded by pine groves, fragrant juniper shrubs, and wildflowers. this whitewashed compound has been carefully restored —- including its original vegetable garden — by a team of local craftsmen under the guidance of interior designer Dorothée Meilichzon. i love what she’s done with the place — it’s got a playful color palette that’s ever so soothing on the eyes. we’re packing light, but plan on fitting in perfectly — a stonewashed skirt, tank and kimono wrap paired with some chic flat sandals and matching tote bag. don’t forget your swimsuit and favorite cover-up that doubles as a mini dress. and while you’re relaxing in this peaceful place, i suggest a really great podcast i just listened to: the goop podcast with guest ellen vora on the anxious mind. it all made such good sense to me!

hurrah! the last three-day weekend of the summer is finally here, and i’ve got plenty to cram into those wonderful three days off. alas, it’s called labor day for a reason, and i indeed will be laboring to get ready for my impending move to my laguna beach cottage. lots more purging and packing to do, but i’m grateful for an extra day off to do it in. enjoy your long weekend everyone and we’ll see you back here on tuesday.

xo, victoria

  1. we’ve featured this gucci wallpaper before, but i love seeing it live and in person in Creative Consultant @timlabenda’s very own bedroom! it looks so great with that cane headboard — so very art deco!
  2. this gisbert poppler-designed kitchen is one of my all-time favorite bits of inspiration. i just love the idea of hanging vintage cabinetry as stand-alone shelving in a kitchen and am on the hunt for something similar, but a bit more rustic for my laguna beach kitchen.
  3. maven collective’s sculpture would most definitely be landing in my new home, too if it weren’t for the fact it might not safely make the journey from portland. but if you’re in the PDX area, i highly suggest picking up this beauty!
  4. can you imagine drifting off to sleep in this ornate bedroom every night? it’s a dreamy space indeed — a florentine palazzo that acts as an ever-evolving artist’s residence, the Numeroventi, an inspiring shelter to artists and creative professionals looking for space to develop their projects.
  5. i love the playful design of france’s holiday magazine — one part campy, one part design-savvy, their magazine covers are always inspiring. this is their beautiful bhutan issue. their shop is lots of fun, too — do check it out.
  6. i have a real ‘thing’ for ornate juxtapositioned with modern kitsch and this 1500s Italian Apartment in palermo is a prime example of just that. i’m sure the architects of the 1500’s never envisioned a 1950’s fridge in here, but i love it.
  7. a brand new brilliant place to stay has popped up across the pond — meet the vibe artist residence in london. looks ever so cozy, and yet quite chic at the same time.
  8. i’m not sure i’d ever be down to paint something this shade of pale green paint, but it sure looks pretty here and blends so well with the nature coming in through its pretty paned windows.

terracotta hand & eye studio lighting fixture. / sfgirlbybay

i recently came upon this lovely lighting made by hand & eye studio, a lovely London-based lighting design company with a clean-lined design aesthetic founded by Thomas Housden & Alex Johnen. the creative team sells directly to residential customers looking to light their homes, but also works directly with businesses, architects, and designers around the world for both residential and commercial projects — and they also accept bespoke commissions. i loved this particular glimpse into a beautiful Italian home using their Terracotta Large lighting fixture in the kitchen and  Terracotta small in the dining room in a way that looks cozy yet elegantly modern. Also featured is hand & eye’s Gooseberry small pendants as really interesting bedside lights. their journal features more inspiring projects, like garance doré’s new home featured in domino. have a look at hand & eye.
